The law was passed by the United States Congress in 1998 partially in response to two treaties ratified by the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Intellectual_Property_Organization" target="_blank">Intellectual Property Organization</a>. This is a two-pronged approach that is relatively effective at eliminating the distribution of stolen intellectual property.</p><p><a href="http://support.google.com/bin/static.py?hl=en&ts=1114905&page=ts.cs" target="_blank">Notifying Google</a>, or any major search engine, of the intellectual property theft taking place at a domain will cause that company to eliminate the offending website from any search result for a given piece of written, recorded, or other intellectual property. On the other hand, sending the same notice to a web host will cause them to investigate the activity going on with a certain user’s account or a certain domain name, they’ll likely issue a temporary or permanent suspension of services to the offending website. That virtually assures that the original content author will be able to rehabilitate their image, recoup their profits, and recover from what is generally perceived to be one of the biggest threats to modern-day content creators.</p><p>Any notice sent to a major corporation under the <strong>Digital Millennium Copyright Act</strong> (DMCA) must follow a certain format and be sure to point out any violations of the policy, any examples or evidence that a violation is taking place, and a statement of good faith and contact information on behalf of the content creator who is filing the complaint.</p><p>Here’s a step-by-step guide which will explain how to create the best DMCA intellectual property theft notice.</p><h4>Step 1: Develop the Digital Millennium Copyright Act Notice with a Proper Business Header</h4><p>Because the DMCA notice which wil be sent to a major corporation is essentially a corporate communication between two entities, the top of the document should look like a standard business memorandum header. It should include the name of the business which received the notice as well as their address, and it should list their address as well as the date it was sent from the intellectual property owner. A prime example looks like the one listed below:</p><pre class="brush: plain; title: ; notranslate"> Date: May 22, 2013 Yahoo! Inc. With that part of the document complete, it’s time to get into the real “meat” of a DMCA notice, where the concrete proof of theft will be displayed and the company will be asked to take action against the violating website or distribution outlet.</p><h4>Step 2: Explain that the Letter is Being Sent to Address Copyright Infringement</h4><p>Now it’s time to tell the company listed in the first part of the letter why they’re receiving written communication from you in the first place. The intellectual property holder must make it clear, in just a few sentences at the top of the document, that they’re contacting the company because of a certain provision of United States copyright law. This provision is contained within a section of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and, once the provision is identified to the company in question, they’ll know exactly how to proceed in order to verify the theft and take action to prevent its recurrence.</p><p>Here’s a great example of how to notify the company that the letter to follow will deal with a complaint under the United States Digital Millennium Copyright Act:</p><pre class="brush: plain; title: ; notranslate"> To Whom It May Concern, This notice serves to notify you that I wish to report a violation of United States copyright law under section 512(c) of the U.S. Copyright Law under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998. It is my belief that the distribution channel in question has not properly obtained licensing or distribution rights for this content and, as your service is promoting their works to the wider online audience, I have sought to address this concern with your office. </pre><h4>Step 3: Identifying the Exact Material Which is Believed Stolen Without Payment or Due Credit</h4><p>The next step of the DMCA notice process is to list the exact intellectual property which has been stolen by the offending internet user, in a list format, until each instance of theft has been exhaustively documented to, in this case, the executives at Yahoo. This will be in a new paragraph below the introduction to the letter, and a great example of how to formulate this paragraph exists below:</p><pre class="brush: plain; title: ; notranslate"> There are several incidents of theft where copyrighted material which I produced, and to which I have exclusive publication and distribution rights, have been duplicated on the offending website. This is generally to prevent the actually infringers from trying to take down the original source material for their own personal gain. This is a relatively simple statement included at the end of the letter, and it looks pretty much identical to the “penalty of perjury” clause at the end of job employment applications and other legal documents.</p><p>Here’s a great template for the statement:</p><pre class="brush: plain; title: ; notranslate">Under penalty of perjury, I hereby swear that all of the information contained in the above notification of copyright infringement is true and accurate. I swear that I am the content owner or that I am authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the above referenced copyrighted content which I have alleged in this notification to have been infringed.</pre><h4>Step 6: Send Out the Digital Millennium Copyright Notice to Each Targeted Corporation via U.S. Certified Mail</h4><p>In most cases, people would simply send a notification to a corporation using regular mail (officially known as Priority Mail in the United States), but this is not sufficient for official communication as it pertains to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Apple Unveils iOS 6 and Mountain Lion

Just in case you’re getting curious already, iOS 6 will be available as a free update for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users around mid-September this year. If you are an iOS developer you can <a href="https://developer.apple.com/technologies/ios6/" target="_blank">download the iOS 6 SDK</a> now.</p><p><img alt="World Wide Developers Conference" src="http://speckycdn.sdm.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/ios_04.jpg" width="640" /></a></p><p>Talking about features, iOS 6 comes with a brand new Maps app (cartography designed by Apple itself). Yes, you guessed it right – good bye to Google Maps. Siri has been enhanced further, including new languages, restaurant recommendations, movie listings, and sports’ scores.<br /> Apart from that, there have been other touch-ups to social networking features, such as better Facebook integration for Contacts and Calendar, and so on.</p><p><img alt="iOS 6" src="http://speckycdn.sdm.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/ios_01.jpg" width="640" /></a></p><p>However, two much-needed (and awaited) improvements are those pertaining to Safari and Email, respectively. In Safari, you can now sync open tabs between desktop and mobile via iCloud (you will need OSX Mountain Lion on your desktop, though). Innovative feature? Definitely not! Many browsers have been offering this for ages.</p><p>In the Email app, you can now designate VIP email senders. So if you wish to prioritize your boss’ emails over those awesome-deals-at-eBay, you can do so easily.</p><p>iOS 6 not good enough for you? Well, Apple has also announced its ninth generation OS X “<a href="https://developer.apple.com/technologies/mountain-lion/" target="_blank">Mountain Lion</a>“, which should be available next month.</p><p><img alt="iOS 6" src="http://speckycdn.sdm.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/ios_02.jpg" width="640" /></a></p><p>And if that wasn’t sufficient to make you happy, new models of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air have also been announced. The new generation of devices will come with higher resolution, retina display and up to 60% faster graphics. Tracking Social Media Sharing and Button-Clicks with JavaScript and WordPress

This popular method of tracking and monitoring each visitor who comes across a website might seem to be a bit broad, but users can actually use JavaScript on certain links to track not only the actual clicks that a link gets, but where those clicks come from and in-depth information about each user who clicks it.</p><p><img src="http://speckycdn.sdm.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tracking_01.jpg" /></p><p>This innovation is powered by a combination of JavaScript and the aforementioned Google Analytics, and it supported natively by several social networking buttons and APIs. For this reason, click tracking in Google Analytics is popularly applied to social networking buttons by blogs so that the site administrators can see exactly which content is the most popular, where it is the most popular, and with what kind of user it is the most popular. It’s a marketing and publishing tool that, at the present time, has no near competitor or comparison.</p><p><img src="http://speckycdn.sdm.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tracking_02.jpg" /></p><p>Because it uses two third-party tools (Google Analytics and Javascript/jQuery) this click tracking can actually be brought right into WordPress with minimal effort. All it requires is adding or modifying social networking links which get published right alongside a website’s content. Users will never know the difference, but site administrators will find the difference quite stark. Visitor traffic will now be more effectively monitored, as each reader’s social media habits will be on the record of the website’s Google Analytics account.</p><p>Here is how to enable this functionality on any WordPress blog by altering a few links and including a few jQuery scripts:</p><h2>Step 1: Adding the Social Media Links to a WordPress Page</h2><p>The first step a developer must take is to add the actual social media links to an entry, or potentially modify the existing links which are already paced alongside website content. These links must be made to interact with the actual API, rather than simply create a “tweet” or “like” link using a standard <code><a></code> tag. To do this, each link will look a bit different and will take on characteristics that blur the line between XHTML and native API. Facebook’s link, in particular, is the most offbeat in appearance. Here’s how each link should look, using full WordPress variables and natively interacting with the website in question.</p><h4>Facebook:</h4><pre class="brush: xml; title: ; notranslate"><fb:like href="<?php the_permalink()?>" send="true" showfaces="false" width="100" layout="button_count" action="recommend"/ ></fb:like></pre><h4>Twitter:</h4><pre class="brush: xml; title: ; notranslate"><a href="http://twitter.com/share" data-url="< ?php the_permalink();?>" data-text="< ?php the_title();?>" data-via="your-website" class="twitter-button">Tweet this!</a></pre><h4>LinkedIn:</h4><pre class="brush: xml; title: ; notranslate"><script type="in/share" data-url="<?php the_permalink();?>" data-counter="right"></script></pre><h4>Google Plus:</h4><pre class="brush: xml; title: ; notranslate"><g:plusone size="medium" callback="plusone_vote"></g:plusone ></pre><p>It’s evident that many of these buttons make use of XML, and what should be apparent to the keen observer is that the Google Plus and LinkedIn buttons will require JavaScript not only for click tracking, but indeed to interface with the server and pull a user ID which will be used when the site’s readers share information. That’s particularly advanced, and it’s the new way that most social media websites are combining XML, XHTML, and their own APIs in combination with OAuth to enable secure, adaptable sharing. Now it’s time to make the buttons work and track user interactions.</p><h2>Step 2: Using JavaScript to Make the Buttons Interface with Social Media Sites</h2><p>Now, the jQuery inclusions must be placed into the site’s <code><head></code> tag in order for each of the buttons demonstrated above to be fully operation. This is done on a per-website basis, so only add the JavaScript snippets for the websites that the blog in question will advertise to users.</p><p>Facebook is once again the most unique snippet of code, as it combines a <code><div></code> tag with its JavaScript excerpt to make things work. That <code><div></code> tag can actually be placed anywhere within the template, but, for the sake of organization, administrators would be well-advised to place it in the same area where all of the social media buttons are displayed.<br /> Here’s what Facebook users will need in order to make the “Like” or “Recommend” button work properly.</p><p>First, the jQuery must be placed into the <code><head></code> tag. The script for Facebook is below:</p><pre class="brush: jscript; title: ; notranslate"> window.fbAsyncInit = function() { FB.init({appId: '', status: true, cookie: true, xfbml: true}); }; (function() { var e = document.createElement('script'); e.type = 'text/javascript'; e.src = document.location.protocol + '//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js';; e.async = true; document.getElementById('fb-root').appendChild(e); }()); </pre><p>After this has been included into the <code><head></code> tag, likely within the selected template’s <code>header.php</code> file, a <code><div></code> tag must be placed within <code>index.php</code> and any other templates which will show these buttons to the readers. That div tag is:</p><pre class="brush: xml; title: ; notranslate"><div id="fb-root"></div></pre><p>Next, the Twitter button must be activated by using jQuery. Unlike the procedure described above for the Facebook button, the relevant code for the Twitter button (or “Tweet this!” link) does not make use of a standalone <code><div></code> tag. Instead, it identifies the button code wherever it might be in the template and applies the script’s actions directly. The Twitter script is also much shorter than the Facebook script; it is contained in a <code><script></code> tag and placed right below the Facebook variant in the site’s <code><head></code> section:</p><pre class="brush: jscript; title: ; notranslate"> jQuery(document).ready(function($) { var e = document.createElement('script'); e.type="text/javascript"; e.async = true; e.src = 'http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js'; document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(e); } </pre><p>The LinkedIn and Google Plus buttons actually use the exact same basic API, and this means they can be combined into just one jQuery instance placed within the site’s <code><head></code> tag. This is convenient for developers, as it saves them time, processing power, and space, and it’s relatively simple to do. This script identifies the unique Google Plus tag or, in the case of LinkedIn, the “script” share tags, and converts them into active buttons. When it’s all put together, the code looks like the following example:</p><pre class="brush: jscript; title: ; notranslate">jQuery(document).ready(function($) { var e = document.createElement('script'); e.type="text/javascript"; e.async = true; e.src = 'http://platform.linkedin.com/in.js'; document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(e); var e = document.createElement('script'); e.type="text/javascript"; e.async = true; e.src = 'https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js'; document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(e); } </pre><p>Notice that, in these instances as well as the script which activates the Twitter button, the scripts which make the buttons active are actually hosted remotely. This, too, helps to speed the loading process. Also, each button is paired with a script that will only load the button once the website has loaded. All too often, scripts hold up a website by requiring their information be loaded before the page finishes loading itself. This can cause a number of unsightly errors for most readers. A more sophisticated script, like the examples above, helps to prevent this from occurring.</p><h2>Step 3: Tracking Interaction with the Social Media Buttons</h2><p>Each of the social media buttons above will display a graphically-rich link that encourages users to share a post via their favorite websites. Paired with each button will be a small counter which shows the number of times a reader has shared the post with each website, and this will also encourage sharing the content off-site at the web’s most popular social destinations. With all of this encouragement, all that’s left to do is add some JavaScript which interfaces with Google Analytics and causes it to pick up information when a user clicks one of the social media buttons.</p><p>It all sounds pretty good, but there’s one pretty big drawback. The remote social networking site has to have an API which supports this kind of interaction between their own button and a service like Google Analytics. Luckily, Facebook and Twitter fully support this type of tracking and user engagement. Unfortunately, sites like LinkedIn, Google Plus, StumbleUpon, and many others, simply do not support this kind of tracking. Of course, Facebook and Twitter are leaps and bounds more popular than the latter three sites, so this may well be a non-issue on most blogs.</p><p>To track the clicks given to Facebook and Twitter buttons, two new snippets of code must be added to what has already been placed within the <code><head></code> tag of the current theme’s “<code>header.php</code>” document. This code actually replaces the entirety of what was added to the document to enable the Facebook button without tracking, so simply paste the information below between the existing <code><script></code> tags as they pertain to the Facebook button:</p><pre class="brush: jscript; title: ; notranslate">window.fbAsyncInit = function() { FB.init({appId: '', status: true, cookie: true, xfbml: true}); FB.Event.subscribe("edge.create",function(response) { if (response.indexOf("facebook.com") > 0) { _gaq.push(['_trackEvent','Facebook','Like',response]); clicky.log(response,'Facebook Like Facebook Page'); } else { _gaq.push(['_trackEvent','Facebook','Share',response]); clicky.log(response,'Facebook Like / Share Post'); } }); FB.Event.subscribe("message.send",function(response){ _gaq.push(['_trackEvent','Facebook','Send',response]); clicky.log(response,'Facebook Send Post'); }); };</pre><p>With this information replacing the original Facebook button, everything a user does when they interact with Facebook via the button on the website will report back to Google Analytics using basic jQuery functions. This means site administrators can track the general locations, user agents, browsers, devices, and other information for all of the users who share a site’s content. Let’s do the same thing for Twitter.</p><p>Instead of replacing the entire body of jQuery script that was used to enable the Twitter button, the snippet below is simply added to the existing <code><script></code> tag in order to turn the button from a standard way to share into a way to share and track those who choose to do so. The <code>header.php</code> and <code>index.php</code> files should be edited, saved, and uploaded, and the code for including the social media buttons via XHTML should be made universal across every page where content is published. When that has been done, the social media buttons will be live and ready to track.</p><p>Be sure to do some bug testing, click the buttons when they first appear, and wait 24 hours for the results to appear within the Google Analytics Dashboard.
