the last summer
We’d not known
just how shallow
the arc of the earth
or how big the globe
or how small
we really were.
We were the center
spinning beneath
our own sun
shaded by our trees
that grew for us to climb.
The wind blew to fill
our sails pushing us
to knew adventures.
We could fly
walk on water
live forever
in that summer
we thought
it’d last forever.
In one and a half minutes
we learned a lifetime
how mortal our small
bodies were
how a simple fall
could take us all
how something so simple
could end the dreams
of that first kiss
those future adventures
that sun that shone
for us alone.
